John Frankl demonstrates a basic guard pass. Underhook one leg and grab the middle of your opponent's lapel. John discusses not to grab too high or else your opponent will counter by pushing underneath your armpit. You must keep your elbow close to your opponent's thigh and your knee close to your opponent's armpit. As for your other hand, instead of grabbing your opponent's pants, grab under his butt. This does two things: (1) this prevents you from getting triangled and (2) this prevents your opponent from getting to his knees while you pass.
