Guard Pass Defense - Two Theories: Staying In-Line & Head Control

May 31, 2010 by admin

Demian Maia describes two theories for defending the guard pass. (1) Stay in-line (or parallel) with your opponent. When your opponent tries to pass, he is trying to be perpendicular to you. Demian discusses the importance of shrimping and re-establishing a position that is in-line with your opponent. Don't just constantly shrimp; shrimp and get in-line. (2) Manipulate your opponent's head towards the floor of the side he's trying to pass. Coupled with a shrimp and in-line will prevent a guard pass.
